Abstract. In this short tutorial traditional and new image compression techniques are presented. By means of different examples, the advantages and drawbacks of various methods of image compression are considered. This tutorial focuses on the application of new, wavelet-based compression techniques, which are especially suitable for the Internet presentation of scanned documents.

This chapter is  available as one-day (6-hour) training package for seminar: the text with remarks for trainer, references and a collection of PowerPoint slides.
